Japan

Original release of the game, released on March 16th, 2006.

North America and Europe

Released on October 31st, 2006 in North America and February 23rd, 2007 in Europe.

  • A 16:9 widescreen option is added in the game configuration, though this results in vertical image loss.
  • Versions outside of Japan use X-button.png to confirm and Circle-button.png to cancel, rather than the opposite.
  • Voice direction is somewhat different for the English version. Characters have more pronounced accents, like Fran's Icelandic accent, and the writing in the Bestiary entries was given more flair to give the impression of Ivalician journal entries.
    • Localizers decided to have the actor who played Gabranth (Michael E. Rodgers) mimic the twin brother Basch's voice (voiced by Keith Ferguson) in the scene where Gabranth is impersonating his twin. In the Japanese version the actors' voices play over one another to give the scene the quality of a dream-sequence, but the translators opted to go for the more "realistic" sound.[1]
    • In the Japanese version, movie subtitles are on by default, but in the English version are off by default. The otherworldly quality of the Occurian speech was thus changed, which was difficult to follow without subtitles.[1]
  • Several unskippable text cutscenes are now skippable or have voice acting.
  • The battle UI is now hidden during mid-battle dialogue cutscenes.
  • Versions outside of Japan do not have an exclamation mark after the text for "MISS", "BLOCK", "PARRY", "COUNTER", and "CRITICAL".
  • Spells no longer consume MP if they do not connect with their target.
  • Quickening chains are no longer accompanied by a message, like "Cool!" and "Very Cool!", beside the chain number.
  • Darkmare has increased HP, Strength, Magick Power, and EXP.
  • The red Crystalbug has increased HP and Magick Power, and casts Firaga, Thundaga, and Blizzaga instead of Fira and Thundara.
  • The blue Crystalbug has increased HP and Defense.
  • The green Crystalbug has increased HP.
  • The Rogue Tomato now rewards LP after each cutscene, rather than just once.
  • Hashmal uses Battle Cry instead of Haste, Protect, and Perfect Defense.
  • The order of the pedestals for the Demon Wall battle is now the same every time, rather than each pedestal's effect being random on each playthrough.
  • Omega Mark XII has its HP decreased from 10,370,699 to 1,037,069, but has its Attack Power increased and the Berserk status effect added to its attack.
  • Disma has increased HP, Strength, and Magick Power.
  • Helvinek has increased HP, Strength, Magick Power, and Speed.
  • Judge Bergan has increased Speed and Attack Power, and is changed from a magick user into a pure physical attacker, with Battle Cry replacing Aero, Watera, Immobilzega, Dark, and Chain Magick.
  • Doctor Cid has decreased Attack Power in the first encounter and decreased Magick Power and Attack Power in the second encounter.
  • The scene where Penelo is being held hostage by Ba'Gamnan is no longer censored.
  • The accuracy underflow bug is removed from the European Platinum Hits version.

Released on August 9th, 2007 in Japan.

List of changes

System

  • A "Zodiac Job System" is added, featuring twelve jobs with individual License Boards corresponding to twelve zodiac signs.
  • Three new game modes are added.
    • Trial Mode—a 100 stage gauntlet—can be entered from the title menu provided the player has a save file of the main game. It features a new battle against all five Judge Magisters as the final trial.
    • New Game+ Strong Mode—unlocked after clearing the original game. All characters start at level 90 and level up normally. Only configuration settings are carried over.
    • New Game+ Weak Mode—unlocked after clearing Trial Mode. All characters start at their original levels (1/2/2/3/3/3) and never level up. Only configuration settings are carried over.
  • Pressing Playstation-Button-L1.png will speed up gameplay. Conversations and events continue to play at normal speed.
  • The game features English voices and Japanese text. Some previously unvoiced event scenes now feature voices and new scenes are added.
  • Several changes are made to the UI.
    • Windows that were previously blue with a white border are now a solid moss-blue color.
    • In the battlefield menu, character job names are displayed next to their portraits, with the LEADER text no longer present.
    • The charge time gauge is green instead of orange when filling.
    • There is a new, separate Mist charge gauge in place of the HP and MP gauges, which are removed.
    • The party menu screen now features job names and LP amounts. Overflowing status icons are displayed over them. Mist charges are rectangular instead of round and change color when filled.

Characters

  • Playable characters' starting LP, items, gil, gambits, equipment, licenses, and base stats are modified.
    • Vaan starts with a Dagger instead of a Mythril Sword.
    • Ashe joins equipped with a Buckler instead of an Escutcheon.
  • Guests have undergone a number of changes.
    • They can be controlled by the player directly.
    • They can gain EXP and level up.
    • Their gambits can be changed and turned off.
    • The player obtains items and gil from guests who join the party.
    • Items used by guests expend the player's inventory.
    • Weapons used by Basch, Larsa, Vossler, and Reddas are improved. Larsa and Reddas can also attack flying targets with their basic attacks.
    • Larsa, Vossler, and Reddas have a different set of abilities.
    • Larsa and Reddas have more augments.

Battle system

  • Many magick spells and technicks are tweaked and recategorized.
    • Spells have a charge time of 23 instead of 30.
    • Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder now damage all targets within an area of effect.
    • Cure now heals all targets within an area of effect.
    • Water, Watera, and Waterga are renamed Aqua, Aquara, and Aquaga.
    • Green Magicks can only be purchased from the Clan Provisioner.
    • The following magicks and technicks are only found inside treasures chests:
      • White Magicks: Renew, Cleanse, Dispel, Dispelga, Protectga, Shellga, Bravery, Faith, Regen, Holy.
      • Black Magicks: Flare, Scathe, Blind, Blindga, Silence, Silencega, Sleep, Sleepga, Poison, Toxify.
      • Time Magicks: Haste, Hastega, Countdown, Float, Vanish, Reflect, Reflectga, Balance, Warp.
      • Arcane Magicks: Death, Ardor.
      • Technicks: Telekinesis, Numerology, Sight Unseeing, Charm, Achilles, Infuse, Gil Toss, 1000 Needles, Revive, Stamp, Shades of Black, Bonecrusher, Wither, Addle, Expose, Shear.
    • Steal, Poach, Telekinesis, Numerology, Souleater, Achilles, Gil Toss, 1000 Needles, Stamp, Shades of Black, Traveler, Horology, Bonecrusher, Wither, Addle, Expose, and Shear have reduced charge time.
    • Charm has increased charge time.
    • Telekinesis, Numerology, Sight Unseeing, Charm, Achilles, 1000 Needles, Stamp, Horology, Bonecrusher, Expose, and Shear have increased accuracy.
    • Wither and Addle have reduced accuracy and effectiveness.
    • Expose and Shear have increased effectiveness.
    • Horology and Souleater are more powerful.
    • Shades of Black and Stamp can no longer target allies.
    • Due to recategorized magicks, Shades of Black no longer casts Ardor, and has a chance to cast Blind, Blindga, Silence, Silencega, Sleep, Sleepga, Poison, and Toxify. The odds between each spell appearing are also evened out more.
  • Some damage-boosting augments are buffed—e.g., Focus now has a 1.5x damage multiplier instead of 1.2x.
  • Certain gambits are renamed and sixteen new gambits (five Ally, four Enemy, and seven Self) are available. All can be bought after leaving the Barheim Passage. Gambits can no longer be found in treasure chests.
  • Mist abilities do not consume MP. They instead use their own Mist gauge similarly to Limit Breaks from previous Final Fantasy titles. Obtaining abilities no longer affects max MP and Mist charges do not diminish when MP is consumed (unless the player is affected by a reversed Elixir or Megalixir). The player's MP is also unaffected by the depletion of Mist charges. However, effects that recover the player's MP will also restore Mist charges. One Mist charge is granted each time the amount recovered totals the player's maximum MP. Effects that fully restore a player's MP will recover all Mist charges.
    • Northswain's Glow is renamed Nordswain's Glow.
    • Certain Concurrences now require fewer Quickenings to activate.
  • Fleeing is renamed "Escaping" when holding Playstation-Button-R2.png .
  • Several changes are applied to Espers.
    • Summon durations are increased from one minute and thirty seconds to four minutes and ten seconds.
    • Various stats are modified, with most of them increased. All Espers have significantly more HP and MP.
    • The player can directly control Espers.
    • Gambits are simplified and can be turned off.
    • MP is now required to cast magicks.
    • Signature technicks are slightly faster, while ultimate technicks have no charge time and a larger area of effect.
    • Every Esper now has the Ignore Vitality and Ignore Reflect augments.
    • Belias can use Cura and Fira, and Painflare is slightly stronger.
    • Mateus can use Blizzara, and Flash Freeze is slightly stronger. Frostwave is slightly weaker.
    • Adrammelech has Cura instead of Curaga and Bio, and Flash Arc is slightly stronger. Judgement Bolt is slightly weaker.
    • Zalera no longer absorbs Holy; has Cura, Warp, and Death instead of Holy and Shock; and has the Ignore Weather & Landscape augment instead of Half MP. Condemnation now deals random damage.
    • CĂșchulainn can use Bio.
    • Shemhazai can use Curaja and Shock.
    • Hashmal can use Curaja and Graviga.
    • Exodus and use Curaja and Ardor.
    • Zeromus can use Curaja and Scourge.
    • Famfrit can use Renew.
    • Chaos has Renew instead of Firaga, Blizzaga, Thundaga, Darkga, Scourge, and Holy. Whirlwind and Tornado no longer deal fractional damage.
    • Ultima has Renew and Holy instead of Flare, and gains Ignore Weather & Landscape.
    • Zodiark has Renew and Hastega instead of Flare, and Final Eclipse deals 60,000 damage instead of 50,000.
  • Certain status effect and item relationships are changed.
  • Certain status effects have their duration formulas adjusted.
  • Almost all attacks now break the 9999 damage limit by default.
  • Unarmed combat is adjusted.
  • Battle chains begin at 2 instead of 1. The first monster defeated is considered the first chain, although nothing is displayed until a subsequent monster is defeated. Drop rate modifiers associated with chains are also adjusted.
  • Battle animations and the CT and combo times are tweaked to be more favorable to players.
  • Many enemies are slightly tweaked. Changes include adjustments to parameters, magicks, technicks, augments, movement patterns, as well as steal and drop items. In some cases, players will need to adopt new strategies against monsters.
    • Safety no longer nullifies Numerology, Wither, and Addle.
    • Lv.99 Red Chocobo has increased Strength.
    • Archaeoaevis in the central area of the Zertinan Caverns has immensely improved stats and new abilities:
      • Level is increased from 38-40 to 59-99.

Items and equipment

  • New items are added, including Dispel Mote, Cura Mote, Bubble Mote, Reverse Mote, Bio Mote, Aeroga Mote, Shock Mote, Gravity Mote, Domaine Calvados, Baltoro Seed, Dark Energy and four Meteorites with various effects. Water Motes are replaced with Aquara Motes.
  • Potions and Hi-Potions restore more HP, but X-Potions restore less.
  • Chronos Tears also remove Slow in addition to Stop.
  • Vaccine is renamed C9H8O4.
  • Bacchus's Wine now has a 100% chance of inflicting Berserk instead of 50%.
  • Various weapons are modified.
    • Many weaker weapons have reduced attack power, as they can be obtained earlier.
    • Swords have quicker charge times, while greatswords are slower, though the latter have improved Evade and a slightly higher combo rate.
    • Daggers have higher attack power, quicker charge times, and a higher combo rate.
    • Axes and hammers have a slightly higher combo rate.
    • Maces have higher attack power, slightly quicker charge times, and a slightly higher combo rate.
    • Measures have increased Evade, a higher change of inflicting status effects, and no longer deal critical hits. All measures now have an element.
    • Katanas have higher attack power, Evade, and combo rate, but are slightly slower.
    • Ninja swords have slightly quicker charge times and most have their elements modified. Stronger ninja swords have a higher combo rate, while weaker ones are much stronger than before but have reduced Evade and combo rate.
    • Spears are slightly stronger, but slightly slower, and can attack flying targets. High-level spears now have an on-hit Disable property. The Zodiac Spear is now obtained from the Hunt Club sidequest or a rare chest in the Henne Mines.
    • Poles have quicker charge times and slight buffs to attack power, Evade, and combo rate, and can attack flying targets.
    • Rods do not increase MP, but have higher attack power and can attack flying targets.
    • Staves have slightly higher attack power and can attack flying targets. Some staves have additional elemental potencies: Cloud Staff now boosts damage from Wind, Lightning, and Water attacks rather than just the latter, and the Staff of the Magi now boosts Ice, Wind, and Holy attacks rather than just the latter.
    • Bows have slightly higher attack power.
    • Crossbows have higher attack power and quicker charge times.
    • Guns have slightly higher attack power and slightly quicker charge times.
    • Bombs have higher attack power and slightly quicker charge times.
    • New "Final Fantasy" weapons are added that share the name and model of an existing weapon, but are more powerful in some way. These weapons have a letter at the end of their name, and if the player were to collect all of these new weapons, the letters would spell FINAL FANTASY.
    • Two new weapons can be found in rare, invisible treasure chests: Great Trango and Seitengrat. They do not have models.
    • Bonebreaker and Bone of Byblos are two new weapons that use formerly dummied models.
    • The Excalipur is a new weapon obtained by defeating Gilgamesh.
  • Various armors are modified.
    • Escutcheon no longer exists.
    • Zodiac Escutcheon now has better stats and also gives Magic Evade.
    • Gendarme is a new shield that gives 90 Evade and Magick Evade and absorbs all elements. It does not have a model.
  • Various accessories are modified.
    • Berserker Bracers are added.
    • Armguard no longer exists.
    • Gauntlets now reduce physical damage when HP critical (Last Stand augment), rather than offering an extra Shield Block augment. No accessory offers Shield Block anymore.
    • Turtleshell Choker gil costs are reduced by 4/5.
    • Cat-ear Hood now turns obtained LP into gil and halves Ice and Wind damage.
    • Jackboots are renamed Germinas Boots and inherit the Cat-ear Hood's stat boosts.
    • Agate Ring halves Wind damage.
    • Argyle Armlet halves Dark damage.
    • Tourmaline Ring halves Ice damage and also protects against Sap.
    • Black Belt also protects against Immobilize.
    • Sash halves Fire damage.
    • Ribbon grants the wearer Libra and Regen.
    • The Diamond Armlet's properties are changed: before, equipping a Diamond Armlet gave a 90% chance of a regular treasure (money or a Knot of Rust) and 10% chance of a special treasure (there were exceptions, however). Now the chances are 95% and 5%, and equipping it no longer yields more money from treasures. The game no longer punishes the player by missing out on some special treasures if opened with Diamond Armlet, like in the original; special treasures are the same item whether the player equips the armlet or not. The Diamond Armlet also makes the wearer immune to Lightning damage.
  • Most shops have their assortments changed.
  • Dark Matter can no longer be acquired from the bazaar, and selling the ingredients needed to make it in the original will result in making the Dark Energy item instead. Dark Energy does not charge up with Knots of Rust or Devour Soul and always deals 50,000 damage to each enemy in range.
  • Enemies in the Pharos that drop Black Orbs now always drop them, rather than every third enemy doing so.

Missions and sidequests

  • Rewards for hunts underwent minor changes.
    • "Lost in the Pudding" gives a Burning Bow instead of a Yoichi Bow.
    • "Befoulment of the Beast" gives a Hunting Crossbow instead of a Recurve Crossbow.
    • "Trouble in the Hills" gives a Platinum Shield instead of a Diamond Shield.
    • "Rodeo to the Death" gives a Caliper instead of an Obelisk.
    • "Get My Stuff Back!" gives an Aegis Shield instead of a Crystal Shield.
    • "Old Legends, Decaying Bonds" gives a Minerva Bustier instead of a Barrel Coat.
    • "Little Love on the Big Plains" gives an Amber Armlet instead of Jackboots.
    • "The Cry of Its Power" gives a Survival Vest instead of a Heavy Coat.
    • "Battle on the Big Bridge" gives an Excalipur instead of a Masamune.
  • Numerous sidequests feature different rewards.
    • The reward received for repeating the sunstone powering quest now depends on the amount of time it takes the player to fully charge the Shadestone. The player receives 200 gil, two Potions, and a Holy Stone for returning within seven minutes, 150 gil and a Holy Stone for returning within fifteen minutes, 100 gil for returning within 35 minutes, and 50 gil for taking longer than 35 minutes.
    • The rewards for giving Pilika her diary back are changed to a Bangle and a Jade Collar, depending on whether the player says they read it or not. In the original version, answering "Read it" acquires a Kilimweave Shirt, and answering "I've done nothing" nets a Shepherd's Bolero, the slightly better reward.
    • Finding Renn in the great cockatrice escape quest now yields a Deathbringer rather than a Diamond Sword.
    • The rewards for the Ktjn sidequest are different. If she moves into Clan Centurio hall, the player will now get a Runeblade rather than a Platinum Sword. If she is found outside the clan hall, the reward is now a Hunting Crossbow rather than a Paramina Crossbow. The rewards for if she moves to Migelo's Sundries are swapped around: Firefly if she is outside, and Fuzzy Miter if she is inside the shop.

Locations

  • Treasure chests are now in different locations and contain different items. There are 753 more chests, bringing the total number to 1,676. Chests also respawn by moving just one area away as opposed to two.
    • The "forbidden chest" concept is removed, which prevented the player from obtaining the Zodiac Spear in the Necrohol of Nabudis if they opened a wrong treasure.
    • The treasures in Site 2 of the Lhusu Mines will now disappear and never respawn after Ba'Gamnan attacks the party. If the player defeats Ba'Gamnan immediately, the treasures will remain there until leaving. This is deemed to be a glitch.
  • Certain weather effects occur under different conditions.
  • More traps are added throughout some areas.
  • The maps for the Ogir-Yensa Sandsea and Nam-Yensa Sandsea are moved to Platform 1 - East Tanks in the Ogir-Yensa Sandsea.
  • The Nam-Yensa Sandsea uses the Cerobi Steppe theme.
  • The Baknamy merchant in the Necrohol of Nabudis is located in the Cloister of the Highborn instead of the Hall of Effulgent Light.

This version is based on the International Zodiac Job System version. It has remastered graphics with high resolution textures and lighting effects. The original people responsible for the localization (Alexander O. Smith and Joseph Reeder) return for the English version.[2]

List of changes

Visual

  • High-resolution upgrades are added for backgrounds, character models, movie scenes, and all 2D elements, including fonts.
    • A new typeface is used for subtitles.
    • The text for hit combos performed by enemies and allied NPCs is blue instead of red, just like for party members. In the Japanese version, an exclamation mark is added.
  • Current generation visual expression is introduced.
  • Menu boxes are now dark blue.
  • The battle menu no longer displays job names.
  • Party menu portraits are wider, and the portraits for Reks, Larsa, Vossler, and Reddas are taken directly from their character art.
  • The Gambits menu shows close-ups of each character's CG render instead of silhouettes.
  • 3D enemy models are shown in the Bestiary rather than illustrations of them.
  • The save menu is modified.

Sound

  • Support for 7.1ch surround sound and high-quality voices are featured.
  • English and Japanese voice options are included, which can be switched in the game configuration.
  • Original and newly re-recorded background music options are included, which can be switched in the game configuration.
    • Eight new tracks are included in the re-recorded setting, notably replacing previously shared themes.
      • The Zodiac Age - Opening credits
      • The Guardians - Garuda, Vinuskar, Daedalus, Pandaemonium, Slyt, Fenrir, and Phoenix
      • Fury of the Entites - Elder Wyrm, Earth Tyrant, Rafflesia, and Fury
      • Lying in Wait - Nam-Yensa Sandsea
      • Tchita Uplands
      • Memories Eternal - Ridorana Cataract
      • The Ultimate Trial - Pharos Third Ascent
      • Gloom - Pharos Subterra
    • Several original tracks are renamed.

Usability

  • Load times are improved.
  • Auto-save functionality is added. The game saves automatically when moving to each new screen, excepting boss arenas.
  • An option for 4x speed is added alongside 2x for the speed mode feature, and play time operability is improved during use.
  • A transparent overlay map is available.
  • Both the X and Y camera axes can be inverted.
  • When playing the digital download version of the game, the player can proceed up to the point where Vaan pursues the Rogue Tomato and returns to the Rabanastre gate. The gate will not open until the download is finished, but the player can explore the desert up to the outpost and save their progress at a save crystal.
  • Trial Mode saves and game data saves were formerly separated, because if the game data was overwritten by the Trial Mode save, the game data would be lost. Now, players can save Trial Mode data to their main game save and receive items, but overwriting that save with a main game save will erase the Trial Mode progress. Items from the last stage in Trial Mode cannot be saved.

Gameplay

  • Each playable character can have two jobs at once. The ability to unlock a second license board is granted upon defeating Belias at the Tomb of Raithwall. Duplicate licenses are shared between both boards owned by a character.
  • FFXII-TZA-Spellcasting.jpg
    The party casting spells simultaneously.
The Effect Capacity system that limited spell-casting is removed.
  • Fire, Thunder, Blizzard, and Cure only affect a single target again.
  • In the English version, Vaccine is renamed Serum, Smelling Salts is renamed Nu Khai Sand, and Alarm Clock is renamed Prince's Kiss.
  • The duck and hexagon icons for Lure and Shell are now used in the Japanese version, rather than a Kanji character and a seashell. In addition, the unique element icons are used instead of circular ones, and the shop speech bubble icon is the regular orange instead of blue. The circular icon associated with gil is changed from yellow to green, while acquired items still have a blue circle.
  • Level one Espers' HP values are doubled, while level two and three Espers' HP values are tripled.
  • The animation for summoning Espers is removed.
  • The information exchange quest in Archades now only requires three chops to proceed in the story, as opposed to the previous nine.

Other

  • The game has 41 trophies. The Sky Pirate's Den was initially removed in exchange for the trophy/achievement system, but restored in patch 1.04 due to fan demand, operating in concert with PlayStation Network trophies where applicable. The names of the trophies mostly match the names and requirements of the original achievements.
  • A new option is added to the title menu, "Credits," that plays a new credits sequence showing a number of credits new to the version of the game, and featuring a theme newly composed for the sequence by Hitoshi Sakimoto, "The Zodiac Age." The sequence features scenes from the game and new original artwork.
  • The introductory cinematic no longer plays when starting up the game. The player is taken immediately to the title screen instead. Square Enix recreated the original cinematic and showed it on YouTube to celebrate 1,000,000 units sold, and it was used to promote the PC version, but it has not been added into the game.
  • Basch's (the red-vested model used for majority of the game) and Balthier's character models are glitched, where Basch's hair, and Balthier's hair, sleeves, and earrings never move in the wind and are static.
  • Balthier's line in the Nalbina Dungeons "If you ask me, they're more executioners than judges." is now out of sync with his lip movements.
  • A glitch concerning Dyce's character model is fixed.
  • There was originally an error in the bestiary for the seeq. Where "The Riddle of Myth" should have appeared, "Ahnas the Holy - Part Two" appeared instead, later repeated in its proper place. This is fixed in patch 1.07.
  • The missing dialogue voice-overs when Vossler converses with Lady Ashe at Ogir Nam-Yensa territory was added[3]. This was not present in the original game[4].

Patch updates

1.01

  • Addresses various minor bugs between GM and launch releases.

1.02–1.03

1.05–1.06

In addition to the improvements added to the PlayStation 4 version, the Steam version is further enhanced with new features.

  • 60FPS is supported.
  • Full controller support is available.
  • The game is compatible with 21:9 ultra-wide monitors. Up to three HD monitors can be used for a potential 48(16x3):9 experience.
